DOOAGH (Tune of “Galway Bay”)

Maybe some day I’ll go down the Brae to Dooagh,
It’s the place I love but left so long ago,
‘Tis there you’ll find the kindest folk in Erin,
Sure their homesteads are a credit to Mayo.

I’d love to walk again o’er Croughaun Mountain,
And ramble ‘round that lake of Corrymore,
And follow in the footsteps of my childhood,
As I walked along the boley in Slievemore.

In this great land there are many, many wonders,
And no one ever holds a stranger grudge,
But I’d leave it all behind tomorrow morning,
If only I could cross the bridge.

The memories of my childhood always linger,
As I sit alone, my glass filled to the brim,
My thoughts are then returning o’er the water
And once again I’m back in lovely Keem.

And if the Lord above my prayers do answer,
I’ll soon be speeding west past Kiltimagh,
And as the evening sun is slowly setting,
I’ll be driving down the brae to old Dooagh.

Martin Mack, Pollagh
