Scoil Acla - Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an age requirement in order to participate?
Scoil Acla caters for both young and old. All activities will have a mixed class of children and adults, depending on ability levels. (Yes, beginning adults are welcome!) For the music classes, the minimum age is usually around seven. Students would need to have a genuine interest in the activity. If you require further clarification, Email Scoil Acla
Can I participate in more than one class/activity?
Depending on the time schedule for the classes, you are welcome to participate in more than one. For example, many students choose to take music classes in the morning and then singing or dancing in the afternoon. The writer’s workshop is an all-day class.
Do I need to have my own instrument?
It would be best to provide your own instrument. On rare occasions, we may be able to source an instrument but there is no guarantee.
Where do the classes take place?
Classes take place in various venues throughout the island.
Can I pre-register for the summer school?
Yes. You may print off an application form from the web site and send your registration fee to Scoil Acla, Cashel, Achill, County Mayo.
How do I secure accommodation for the week?
There are several hotels, guesthouses, B & Bs, and self-catering accommodations. In addition, there are caravan parks with camping facilities and hostels on the island. For further information, please consult the Achill Tourism website.
Are the classes held through the medium of Irish?
No, the classes are all taught through English even though the majority of tutors can speak Irish. As half of Achill is a Gaeltacht region there is a great emphasis on the use of Irish especially ‘Gaeilg Acla’ (the Achill dialect) at our events and through out the week in general.
